Motor Shaft Hardware Upgrade & Maintenance

Summary:
D&S has released an upgraded motor shaft fastener kit and new best practices for preventive maintenance checks to improve long-term performance and reduce the risk of hardware loosening.

What’s Changing

As of February 2025, D&S has updated the motor shaft hardware used in production. Previously, shafts were secured with a grade 8 bolt, Loctite, and a set of washers threaded into both ends. In some cases—particularly on carriage motors—these bolts loosened over time, potentially leading to shaft or motor damage.

The new standard hardware includes:

• A long set screw

• A serrated nut

• Loctite threadlocker

This combination provides stronger thread engagement across all motor types and improved long-term durability based on bench tests and field performance.

New Preventive Maintenance Procedure

To help monitor fastener integrity moving forward, we now recommend the following steps:

1. Apply a torque mark (paint line) across the nut and mounting surface during install or PM.

   • This creates a clear visual cue—if the line is broken or shifted, the fastener may be loose.

2. If a fastener appears loose:

   • Remove it completely

   • Clean off all old Loctite

   • Reapply fresh Loctite

   • Reinstall and allow proper cure time before operating

⚠️ Note: Re-tightening a fastener without removing and reapplying Loctite weakens the bond and may lead to failure, even if the fastener feels secure.

Engineering Update

Going forward, all new D&S systems will include torque marks on carriage motor nuts from the factory to simplify PM checks for your team.
